I frequently get comments about how I'm involved in quite a few activities. As you all probably know, I own a photography and design business, but also a wellness business. Even those these two don't seem related, there is a reason I'm involved in each. As a self-employed individual, I'm constantly thinking about income. How much do I have, where is it coming from, etc. One of the things about being self employed is that there is typically no residual income associated with it. That is to say, if I don't work, there is no money coming in. That has the potential to be rough -- especially in a down-turned economy or even an off season. It has also made me very aware of the fact that I need not only multiple streams of income, but also a residual income source that will pay me even when I decide not to work.
I simply am not happy putting all of my eggs into one income basket. There is no security in doing this -- whether you're an employee or self-employed. To think that you have job security is pretty much kidding yourself. Even if you've been a great employee for a company, the sad truth is that in the long run, that company's loyalty lies only to its bottom line. That is why I think it is so very important to diversify ones income sources. This might seem like a strange concept, especially when we're programmed to have just one job. However, creating multiple streams of income is really the only way to ensure that you're going to have income coming in all the time. Its about thinking outside the box.
I created my wellness business in response to my family's need to diversify our income sources. Wellness is definitely different than photography. However, its not just that I have a wellness business. I am certified to teach a weight management program called the Transitions Lifestyle System. I'm also certified to implement this program into licensed health professionals' offices. We all know there is a need for weight management programs (especially in Indiana). However, there are two things that make this business truly powerful. The first is the ability to earn a residual income by building a team of certified coaches and/or business partners. The second is that the parent company offers the opportunity to do business in 7 multi-billion dollar industries. So perhaps I meet someone who isn't interested in health and wellness (yep...they're out there). Maybe they're interested in computers and web design. Maybe they're interested in the automotive industry, or cosmetics, anti-aging or pet health...it doesn't matter because the parent company for Transitions allows me to partner with individuals and businesses in any of those industries (and more) to provide additional products for their customers.
I have to say that it is an amazing thing to know that I'm not only helping myself, but helping all the business partners that I work with to create an additional revenue stream. And if they choose, that revenue stream can create a diversified, residual income for them. Who ever thought that a photographer could be making a residual income from wellness coaches, makeup artists and other web design companies?
I know it IS possible to create additional streams of income even if you're working at a full time job. There are legitimate, professional companies that are looking for hard working individuals who want to to build a secure future for themselves.
I really want to know what you guys are thinking. Is there anybody out there who feels the way I do? Looking for a way to create more income or a secondary stream of income? What are your questions? What are you concerns? What is keeping you from having the secure future that you want to have -- or that you deserve to have?
Leave a comment or shoot me an email. I'd love to chat with folks who are ready to move forward. Life is good. :)
