We built our home in 2003 and for the most part, the rooms have remained "builder white" or ecru or what ever color it is that they spray paint the inside of new construction. Generally, it takes some inspiration (followed by perspiration) for me to be motivated into design and actual decoration of a room. One of the beauties of photographing high-end homes for a living is the inspiration that comes from the design and decoration of many custom homes. The inspiration for the nursery came in part from my exposure to these homes. I also surfed the web for ideas. The colors ultimately came from the bedding that I chose.
Here is the room that we started with. It is approximately 12x10 in size with a large bank of windows on one wall and a large closet opposite the windows. We know we're having a girl, so the nursery had to be feminine, but not something that would need redecorating as soon as she's not an infant. I think we succeeded in creating a space that she'll be able to grow into for a few years.
Here is what the room started off looking like:
Here is the crew before we started painting. Grandpa & Grandma Budensiek, Sarah Budensiek, Dave & Amy Latka.
We used 4 different colors of Dutch Boy Refresh interior latex paint in Eggshell finish, purchased at Menards. The Refresh paint has "odor eliminating technology" (and Arm & Hammer baking soda), which really cut down on the odors. We had the windows closed in the room while painting (due to the extreme heat outside) and it didn't smell like paint at all. I was very impressed!
The little things in the stripes are lady bugs and flowers that match the decor on the crib bedding. They were hand painted by my sister, baby girl's Aunt Sarah.
We're not quite finished yet. There are a couple chair rail pieces that still need to be hung, Grandma Suzie is also working on the valance and blinds for the window and Dave and Grandpa Ken are putting in overhead lighting/ceiling fan. And, of course, the furniture all needs to be moved in. We just couldn't wait to see some of it together, hence the little bookcase and the chair. We all just think its super adorable and are super excited for baby girl to get to use it. Finished product pictures will be posted after the crib is delivered and the finishing touches are put in place, but I already love it.
